AGM 2010 Minutes to follow

Presentations by the Chairman on behalf of the LRGC were made to Roy Gollop and John Stuckley.

Monday, 10 August 2009

Hi all.
Thanks to all those who helped with the taster session yesterday.
Our first weekend with 2 boats in the water went pretty well considering how busy the harbour was at times, but it's now more important than ever that we're all on the ball, and very aware when the gigs are coming in for crew changes, etc, to prevent any accidents or delays. Please make a note, when the rota goes out, of the time you're down to row, and also which boat you're on, and endeavour to be down at least 10 minutes early.
We're competing at Paignton on Saturday, so this weekends rowing will be Sunday only.
Thanks,
H

Message from Henry

Hi all.
Rebel is repaired now and will be home tomorrow. Therefore the rowing schedule will commence as normal. I will be operating a rota for Saturday but not Sunday as this is launch day. Anyone who can help on Sunday morning, please let me know.
Due to peoples commitments, I have found it impossible to get the launch crews together for a row this week. If you are on one of the Gigs for the launch, can you please try to row this week sometime, and endeavour to make Saturday.
Jackie and Diana - can you ensure that you cox out of the harbour this week please.
I'm assuming that all competitive men are available for the racing on Sunday. If you're not please let me know asap.
Cheers,
Rebel will be dry enough for Chris Douglas to start the repair on Tuesday. We will then need to oil her on Thursday and Friday, and let her dry over the weekend. She will be ready to row from Monday the 27th.
As Chris will be busy painting Black Ven, I need a few volunteers to help oil Rebel on Thursday/Friday. Please could you mail me if you can help for a few hours on either day.
As Rebel will be back on the water the week before Black Vens launch, I would like to get the 2 crews who are rowing on launch day together for a couple of rows on evening next week. If you are one of the rowers, could you please let me know if there is an evening you can't make.
Cheers,

Thought you'd all like to know how we did at Weymouth Regatta on
Saturday!

Ladies B 11th of 11
Mens B 9th of 9
Ladies A 11th of 12
Mens A 7th of 12
Ladies Vets 6th of 6
Mens Vets 3rd of 9
Just to keep you up to date, Rebel is now in dry cover, and the repair should begin next week. It looks like we will not get her back on the water until the week leading up to the launch of Black Ven, bit I will keep you posted.
Don't forget oiling of Black Ven takes place tomorrow, everyone welcome to put on a coat; and at 8.30am on Saturday we are turning her, ready for painting. Please come and help if you can spare half an hour.
Cheers,
Unfortunately Rebel has developed a split in one of her planks and this needs to be repaired before she can be rowed again. This means finding somewhere under cover, getting her dry, filling the split, and finally giving her a few coats of oil. Therefore rowing is suspended until further notice.
Just a reminder that oiling of Black Ven takes place on Friday, so if you fancy putting a coat on, and being part of the boat, please go down. Tea and cake in abundance! On Saturday at 8.30am we will be turning Black Ven over ready for painting. This requires a bit of muscle so if you can spare half an hour please come and help.
Finally my sincere apologies for the suspension of the rowing schedule. This is the nature of wooden boats unfortunately, and Rebel has been used an awful lot since her launch last year.
Thank you all for your understanding.

Hi all. Sunday's rota attached.
Also 2 dates for anyone who wishes to help Gail:
Friday the 17th July: Oiling inside Black Ven. If you want to apply a coat, oiling will be happening all day, so go on down!
Saturday 18th July: Turning Black Ven over. We need hands to help turn the gig, ready for painting. If you can come down at 8.30am and help, that would be great.

enry barlow henry barlow Hi all.
Attached is the details for Weymouth regatta, this Saturday.
The Coxes meeting will take place at 11.15am, with the first race at 12.00pm. Can all rowers please be there by 11am, thanks.
We will be picking Rebel up at 8.00am on Saturday morning, and will need one other car of rowers to follow us up and help at launch at Weymouth. If you can do this let me know.
Cheers,
H
Hi all.
Paul Dyer has done a fantastic job on repairing Rebel, and so the training schedule will be as normal this week, Men on Tuesday, Women on Wednesday.

Because we are competing at Weymouth this Saturday, club rowing will only be available on Sunday(12th) this weekend.
Cheers,
H.
Hi all.
Unfortunately two of the knees supporting thwart number four on Rebel broke today, and will have to be repaired. Paul Dyer is kindly undertaking the repair, but she will not be ready for tomorrows rowing. Hopefully she will be back on the water by Tuesday, but I'll keep you posted. Sorry to all who turned up today and were disappointed, but it's just one of those things.
Cheers,
H.

Hi all.
Please find attached details of the regatta at Swanage later this month. If those wishing to go could please let me know if they want to camp and, how many nights, ASAP. I think it's likely quite a few of us will stay on the Saturday night at least, as entertainment has been laid on, and it will be good to socialise with other clubs. So far 10 clubs are attending.
Cheers,
H.

Hi all.
The club will be taking part in it's first regatta of the season, at Swanage on the 23rd of May. Swanage are always very hospitable, and put on a good event, so if any members fancy coming along and cheering the rowers on, we'd appreciate it.
On that note, could all rowers who wish to row in this regatta please let me know.
Cheers,
H.

Hi all.
Rowing this weekend will take place on Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday. We are not rowing on Sunday due to the powerboat race taking place in Lyme.
From 11am on Saturday we will be running taster sessions, so if you are available to help I would appreciate it. Rowing for members on Saturday will start at 9am, with time for 4 half hour sessions, so first come, first served.
Cheers,
Henry.

Hi all, rota attached.
Due to a poor weather forecast, Wendy Duffy , the coach from Weymouth, will not be over this weekend. Jackie is arranging another date, so we'll let you know. The weather is looking particularly bad for Saturday, with southerly winds gusting to force 8, and heavy rain. Please be sure to check the gig phone. Sunday, at the moment, looks a little better.
Cheers,

Hi all.
Lyme Regis Gig Club will be running a ‘taster’ session for non members (and lapsed members!) on Saturday 2nd May. Anyone interested in picking up an oar and having a go in a gig, come down to the Victoria Pool (the pool in the ‘fork’ of the Cobb behind the Aquarium) on Saturday morning at 11am.
Cheers,
Henry.

p.s. Don't forget to tell any friends you have who may be interested.

Hi All

For rowing sessions this Saturday, 25th April, Wendy Duff ex-ladies captain from Weymouth has offered to come over and give us some coaching tips.

For a chance to row with her just email Henry before Thursday night as normal for your place on this weekend's rota.

Cheers

Hi all.
This Saturday we are running some taster rows for the newly formed Bridport club. These will start at 12.15, after we have rowed. I need some help as I have 18 people coming over, and I will do 3 novices per boat. Therefore we will do 6 boats of 20 mins or so. If you can help to crew these boats let me know when you mail me your availability.

Hi all.
I've attached the rota for Saturday in the vain hope we will be rowing, but it looks highly unlikely, so please check the gig phone in the morning.
I've also already made the decision to cancel the taster session on Sunday as the sea is going to be rough at best, and so not the conditions to be rowing for the first time. If you had a friend/acquaintance/family member coming down, please could you let them know. I will reschedule for Sunday 1st of Feb.
Thanks to all those who offered to help.

Hi all.
I was going to post a rota for Sundays rowing, but I'm afraid the weather is going to be worse than today, with force 9 easterlies forecast, so there really will be no chance of rowing. We will row again on Saturday the 3rd of January; let me know if you're available.
Happy New Year!
Henry.

Hello all.
It was hoped that we would row on Boxing day, but due to the amount of drying out Rebel needed, the oiling has only just begun, so she will not be ready. Looks like stong easterlies anyway! We will also not be going to Swanage on the 28th, but if anyone fancies a row on Sunday, let me know, and I'll put a rota together.

Can I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy Christmas, and thank you all for your help, co-operation and patience, during the last year. It's been a privilege getting to know those of you I'd not met before, and here's to a great 2009!

Cheers,
Henry.

Hi all.
I'm afraid rowing is cancelled this weekend due to maintenance on the gig. We are drying her out, which is taking longer than anticipated. After this she is being cleaned, oiled inside, and some paint work touched up. This is going to take us into next week.
I apologise for this, but this is essential work.
Cheers,
Henry.

Hi all.
Rebel was moved into the Boat Building Academy today, to allow her to dry out, and for some much needed maintenance.
Over the last 6 months she has been used a lot, and because of this there is a lot of work to be done. Unfortunately this means that there will definitely be no rowing on Saturday, and possibly not on Sunday either. I apologise for this, but this week is the only opportunity we have to get her under cover, to get the work done.
Cheers,
Henry.

November News Letter

Come cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer,
To add something more to this wonderful year,
It’s hard to believe that four months have passed since we launched Rebel. That wonderfully colourful day in June seemed to somehow capture the spirit of dynamism, positivity and commitment that is Lyme Regis Gig Club.

The Gig Club has also rather magically captured the imagination of people of different ages, old families and new, in and around Lyme Regis and in a short period and without too much promotional activity has a membership of over one hundred.

It was clear that Lyme Regis Gig Club needs to continue to grow rapidly if it is going to meet this high level of interest. Which is why the Club’s Committee decided that significant resources would be devoted to reach a ‘critical mass’ if we are to deliver on expectations. This has seen the Club commission a second gig in October 2008 for completion in July 2009 and the building of the gig shed on Monmouth Beach.

The last four months have seen Lyme Regis Gig Club running a rowing programme that has had Rebel being rowed in the evenings and weekends and the Club participating in its first competitive events in Swanage and Weymouth. In parallel the Club members have put in a herculean effort to build the gig shed and be ready to start to build gig two. On top of this we have produced a very professional Members Handbook, a copy of which you can pick up at our office or download from the Gig Club website.

To help fund its development Lyme Regis Gig Club is now registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) which means it can apply for Gift Aid from donations that are made to the Club. This means Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise will give the Club an additional 28p for every £1 raised - for example, a single gig oar will cost the club £305 which would be covered by donations of only £239 and we will very soon need a minimum of 6 new oars!

I am conscious that whilst The Club has achieved a lot, this has been at the cost of not perhaps communicating with members as regularly as we might have wished. The Management Committee would like help with communications and please contact me if you would be willing to help with this. The membership of Lyme Regis Gig Club is its lifeblood and it’s important that you feel actively involved in developing our activities in the future.

The hearty singing of shanties is now very much a part of Lyme Regis Gig Club we are very lucky to have a crew of singers led by Honorary Musicians Ian Thompson and Adrian Pearson who have helped to make Rebel’s launch and our social events such fun. So remember ‘We will rant and we’ll roar like true British sailors, We’ll rant and we’ll roar on the salt sea!

The success of Lyme Regis Gig Club has been laid by the people who are working together to make things happen and by the Power Boat Club, the Boat Building Academy, the Town and District Council, West Country Vending and the generosity of our sponsor Otter Brewery and our generous patron George Eyre.

Consider this when you are next in the gig – It is ‘To honour we call you, not press you like slaves!’

Rowing Update

Since the launch at the end of June Rebel has been at the centre of a robust rowing programme with sessions taking place in the evenings and at weekends when she has often been out to sea a dozen times a day.

Competition

Competitive events are taking place on one Sunday each month over the winter with the Weymouth and Swanage Clubs. Two events have been held so far with our performance improving each time and our crews beginning to be in serious contention. It’s terrific to see the Lyme Regis teams, who have only had access to Rebel for the last four months, doing so well against the other clubs who have had seven or eight years experience.

Lyme Regis will be hosting the next Winter Competition Event, which will be taking place on Sunday November 30th at 11am. There are likely to be seven or eight races during the course of the day and opportunities for members to participate as competitors, stewards and providing team, coffee and help as required. Ship aboard and contact me if you’d like to be involved.

Training

Training is now on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Mornings are set aside for the more competitive, experienced rowers, and from 2pm we will run training for those who wish to be competitive, but have not done a lot of rowing yet, and those who are rowing to keep fit or for fun. To check for the latest training information, times, etc. please check the website http://www.lymeregisgigclub.com/training.htm or ring: 07531191547 to check if training is still on. Please DO NOT leave a message on this number, it is for information only.

The effective management of the rowing programme is going to be crucial to the future of the Club, which is why the Management Team has formed a dedicated Rowing Sub Committee. The aim for the Rowing Sub-Committee is to introduce a training schedule to support the safe running of the club and coaching for members, particularly those who want to compete.

Coxswain Training

One key objective is for the Club to be able to field at least ten Coxswains by the launch of the second gig next year and a dedicated training course will be run over a winter weekend for those interested. Although some coxswains may wish to steer competitively, we also need competent people who can take the boat out at any time, whether for training or socially, so please do not think you have be Lester Piggot(?) size – I will be joining in for example!

Please contact the Rowing Captain, Henry if you’d like to become a Lyme Regis Gig Club Coxswain.

Gig Shed

Thanks to Lyme Regis Town Council the Club has been able to secure a site on the seaward side of the Boat Building Academy Car Park off Monmouth Beach on which to build a shed. Hardly had approval been given a team, under the direction of Club Bosun, Chris Douglas swung into action and acquired a marvellous wooden building but also constructed it and painted it white. The Gig Shed is designed to store two gigs and provide storage.

Gig Two

Its clear the Club needs a second gig if it is going to compete in regional events and provide local training. After a competitive selection process the Club in September appointed Gail McGarva to build the new gig. Work is advancing and please drop in to the Gig Shed to see the work underway, but don’t distract Gail for too long as we are planning to take delivery of the new boat in early July 2009 and every moment counts.

To enable this to happen Lyme Regis Gig Club has recently received grants from West Dorset District Council, Sports Relief and Dorset County Council. More news on this soon.

Fundraising

Inevitably the growth of Lyme Regis Gig Club comes down to our ability to raise funds to buy the kit we need and ensure we are generating revenue throughout the year to meet operating costs, The Club Committee’s has formed a Fundraising Team to continue to generate the monies needed to ensure financial viability and development plans. Please contact Kerry
Maguire at maguirekerry@googlemail.com if you’d like to joint the fundraising team.

The building of the gig shed and the second boat are the two main current capital projects and funds for these are being raised primarily through grant funding.

The on-going running costs will have to be met through a mixture of membership and rowing fees, sponsorship, fundraising events, merchandising and what ever entrepreneurial activities we can think of.

Lyme Regis Gig Club is fortunate to be sponsored by Otter Brewery who have provided both direct support and beer to enliven social events. The Club continues also to supported by a Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy, The Power Boat Club, Lyme Regis Town Council and others. This includes Nigel Clarke Publishing who have kindly offered Lyme Regis Gig Club a page on their forthcoming local Tide Times, of which 12,000 are printed and circulated each year.

Shirts, Caps and Cards

Lyme Regis Gig Club has a range of polo shirts, complete with logo, that retail at £15.00 each and stylish ‘Rebel’ Caps that sell for £10.00 each. These items are priced for each to raise a small amount of money for the Club and are available from Tony Short tony@short50.orangehome.co.uk. The Gig Club is now also able to offer a stunning pack of four atmospheric cards showing Rebel to her best advantage. The Cards retail at £3.50 for a pack of four and are good for Christmas, Birthdays and other occasions. Contact me if you’d like to buy a pack.

Events Programme

The summer rowing season came to a close with a Trafalgar Night Celebration at the Powerboat Club on October 18th where a good time was had by all!!! Trafalgar Night raised £600 for the Club and well done to all who made the evening such fun.

Events are being planned including a possible social evening in the run up to Christmas and a major Spring fundraising event to be held at Uplyme Village Hall on Saturday March 21st 2009.

Hello all.
A couple of minor concerns have been raised with regard to training/rowing matters.

1) Now the weather has changed, people are not so prepared to wait on the shoreline for their turn to row, quite understandably. With this in mind I am going to produce a rowing rota for the weekends, so members are given a time to row. The rota will be in 3/4 hour slots, starting at 10am till 1pm for the more experienced, competitive rowers, and 2pm onwards for less experienced, and social rowers.
To facilitate this, anybody who knows they will be rowing, should contact me with the day/s they can row, no later than the Thursday before. I will then draw up a rota, and email it out on the Friday. I will leave the 11.30am slot free, for those who happen to turn up, etc.
This is a bit of trial and error, but please bear with me. To contact me, either:

TEXT 07733017325 with name as I don't have all mobiles yet., or
EMAIL henrycbarlow@googlemail.com

2) There have been some concerns raised that there is a clique developing in the rowing side of the club. There is a hard core group of rowers who want to be very competitive, and subsequently have committed a lot of time to rowing practices. Because of this, they have become very friendly, through spending so much time together, but please let me assure all members that the club is very aware not to become cliquey. If any member has any problems at all regarding rowing matters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

3) Winter League.
The winter league with Swanage and Weymouth is a "fun" competition, designed to give us all a bit of racing experience. These meets are open to all, from novices up, who wish to compete. The next meet is in Lyme on the 30th of November, let me know if you wish to take part.

4) Dry training.
We're in the process of establishing some spin and circuit classes. Info to follow soon.

5) World Championships, Isles of Scilly. 2,3,4 of May 2009.
Anybody who wishes to go to the Worlds next year, now is the time to book camping etc. Please could any members who want to camp on St.Marys, whether rowing or supporting, let me know ASAP, so I can book some pitches for the club.

I think that is all at the moment, apologies for the length of the mail.

Cheers for now,
Henry.

A note from your Rowing Captain please read and digest

Hello to all Gig club members.
My name is Henry Barlow, and I'm the rowing captain of the L.R.G.C. Now Rebel has been launched, it is my duty to devise a rowing schedule to allow as much rowing as possible. As I'm sure you're all aware, there are lots of people who want to have a go, and so I will endeavour to get Rebel out on as many evenings and weekends as possible. This is all weather dependent, and it has not been kind to us so far. There are also only a few of us who have coxed a gig, and so we going to have to commit a lot of time.

The website will have the rowing schedule on it by the end of the week, and we also have a designated mobile number members can ring to check if training is still on in iffy weather.

The number is:07531191547

I'm also looking into the possibility of taking Rebel on the river Axe when the sea is too rough.

To make my job a little easier, please could all members who wish to row, email me back with your name, age, gender, and whether you want to be a social rower, or a competitive rower.

We are hoping to have Rebel out this Saturday and Sunday for a few hours from 12 noon, weather permitting! Please let me know if you can make it.

Cheers to all.
Henry.
